JCHS Volunteer Opportunities

Events Volunteer: The museum hosts several events throughout the year. Volunteers are needed to support the planning of the event, as well as a variety of functions during the event. This may include setting up, ticket sales, serving food, clean up and general greeting and interaction with attendees.

House and Grounds Volunteer: Volunteers in this position assist the Caretaker in routine indoor and outdoor maintenance. Some typical tasks include gardening, mowing, winter shoveling, trimming hedges, painting or general cleaning.

Desk Reception/Office Volunteer: Volunteers in this position answer telephones, greet museum visitors and answer visitor’s questions. Volunteers in this position also assist the Business Manager with administrative duties like making phone calls, filing, entering information into databases, etc.

Museum Docent: The word “docent” comes from the Latin “docere” – to teach. Volunteers in this position guide school and group tours through museum exhibits, teach visitors about the value of having a local museum and answer visitors questions. This position requires volunteers to speak clearly and confidently, and be able to manage stairs.

Collections Volunteer: Volunteers in this position assist the Collections Committee in accessioning, inventorying, documenting, curating and maintaining the permanent and educational collections at the museum. Volunteers may also assist in the development and construction of museum displays. This position requires the use of stairs.
